John Sharry is a social worker and family psychotherapist with over 30 years’ experience as a child and adolescent mental health professional. He is a founder of the Parents Plus Charity, an adjunct Professor at the School of Psychology in UCD and parenting columnist for The Irish Times. He is co-developer of the evidence-based Parents Plus Parenting when Separated Programme, and the bestselling author of ten self-help books for families including Parenting When Separated: Helping Your Children Cope and Thrive. John is also a leading innovator in solution-focused practice and the author of several professional textbooks including Becoming a Solution Detective, Solution-focused Groupwork and Counselling Children Adolescents and Families – A Strengths-Based Approach.

Many separated families are in a state of high conflict which can create stress and trauma for parents and children. As a professional if can be challenging to navigate this conflict and it is easy to get ‘sucked into’ unhelpfully taking a side and to lose a focus on the needs of the child. In this workshop, John will present a strengths-based approach to understanding conflict and to joining with each person in the family. In particular, John will provide strategies which front line practitioners can use to help parents to compassionately understand their children as well as looking after their own needs as a parent.
