Support Our Building Futures Fund
One Family was founded as Cherish in 1972. This year, our 45th anniversary, we will say farewell to our Headquarters, Cherish House. We will hold all of its memories and take them with us to our new HQ in Smithfield where more families will be helped to have happier futures.
While we are sad to leave Cherish House, our work must always come first. The families who access our services need a modern, fit for purpose building and we have found one in Smithfield, Dublin 7. Like our founders before us, we’ve worked hard to secure it. Now we need some help to refurbish it to the standard that the parents and children we support deserve, and to enable us to support even greater numbers of parents and children through difficult times.
You can help now by donating to our Building Futures Fund. Your support will be publicly acknowledged (or you can choose to remain anonymous), and your donation will help us to help parents to create better futures for their families.
Why does this matter?
“I am a single mother. I cherish my child. Look at me.”
This was the message of our founding member Maura O’Dea when she appeared on the Late Late Show at a time when women who were parenting on their own were ostracised from society, held in Mother and Baby Homes, and forced to give up their babies. This was 1970s Ireland, the decade that also saw our founders “beg, borrow and steal” to secure a dilapidated building on Lower Pembroke Street, Dublin 2. It would become our HQ for over 40 years, Cherish House. Cherish House became a place of hope and sanctuary, of bravery and determination.
Today we work with women and men who parent alone, who share parenting, who are separated or separating, and their children, offering emotional support, practical assistance, and professional services. The people we work with know the trauma and pain of desertion, violence, illness and poverty; of familial and societal rejection. We provide specialised supports for families experiencing these great difficulties and challenges, services for young people in care, supports for people experiencing crisis pregnancy, and a national helpline. And we advocate on behalf of those one-parent families who still suffer the highest rates of poverty in Ireland. It is not family form that most influences outcomes for a child, but living in consistent poverty.
In 2017, 45 years on, we remain dedicated to forging a more just society where all children are cherished equally.
Become part of their story of resilience and hope.
Your donation will be used to create a crèche, a children’s sensory garden, counselling support rooms, and a training room.
Every donation matters and each one is important for us and for the people who are our clients. Whether €5 or €5,000, we promise that 100% of your donation will directly support our new building refurbishment and so will help families in Building Futures.
