One Parent Family Tax Credit
Maximising your income is all-important in the current economic climate and one way of ensuring you have everything you are eligible for is by checking your Tax Certificate to see if you have all the credits you may be entitled too.
For working one-parent families, either those parenting alone or sharing parenting, there is the One Parent Family Tax Credit. This amounts to €1830 a year and it reduces the tax deducted from your pay.
To qualify you must have a dependent child resident with you overnight for all, or at least some, of the tax year.
- This is irrespective of whether you are single, separated, divorced, widowed or deserted.
- A dependent child is a child aged under 18 or over 18 and in full time education or permanently incapacitated.
Both parents can claim for the credit if they are working and their child stays overnights with each of them during the year. However, you must not be living with another person as husband and wife.
To claim this credit: complete form OPF1, which is available from www.revenue.ie, and send to your regional Revenue office.
You can earn up to €40,400 at the 20% tax rate with the balance at 41%, if you qualify for the One Parent Family Tax credit.
Other tax credits:
- Rent Relief for Private Rented Accommodation
- Tax Relief on Service Charges (domestic waster collections)
- Trade Union Subscriptions
- Health/Medical Expenses Relief
- Tuition Fees
