Holidays

Every family needs a holiday and when you’re bringing up children alone you can need the break even more. For many one-parent families a holiday can seem like a dream. But with some forward planning it is possible to find a good-value break that suits your family and your budget. Make sure to check if your tour operator or hotel waive single occupancy supplements. Many now waive this fee and may offer reductions for children travelling with one adult.

Holidaying abroad
Here are some general guidelines to prepare you for travel abroad.
Before you travel
Check out if you need a visa to travel to your destination. Your travel agent should be able to tell you about local currencies and time differences.
Passports
With the exception of travel to the UK, Irish Citizens need a valid passport to travel to all other destinations.
Passports for children
Children under 3 can apply for a 3-year passport, and children between 3-17 can apply for a 5-year passport. The parental consent section of the passport form must be signed by both parents or guardians each time a new child’s passport is issues.
If you are the sole legal guardian of a child you do not have to get the second parent’s consent to get a passport for your child or to travel abroad on holiday. However, you will have to sign an affidavit stating that you are the sole legal guardian. If you are not in touch with your child’s other parent, or that parent refuses to give their consent, you can apply for a Court Order, which allows the Passport Office to issue the passport without consent.
Health
A European Heath Insurance Card, available from your local HSE, will allow you to receive emergency medical treatment on the same basis as nationals in any EU country. Make a record of any medical conditions or allergies in case of emergencies. Chose sun protection products specially designed for children. Keep small babies out of the sun completely and ensure older children wear hats with neck flaps to protect head and neck.
Insurance
Getting travel insurance is very important as the full cost of medical treatment may not be covered by the Insurance Card. Insurance can also cover many situations such as cancellation, loss of luggage, and lost or stolen money or belongings. You don’t have to buy insurance from the travel agent where you purchase your holiday. It pays to shop around for a good deal.
Driving abroad
If you are intending to drive abroad make sure you bring your valid Irish Driving License with you. Some countries outside the EU may require you to hold an International Driving License. The embassy of the country can tell you of any requirements before you depart. Always make sure you are properly insured for driving while overseas.
